Melbourne Tourists Transport Guide

The Melbourne Tourist Transport Guide

Visiting a city as large as Melbourne for the first time, or maybe even the second or third time, can be a daunting experience. Of course you will want to explore everything this vibrant city has to offer but the last thing you want to do is get lost.

Public transport

Melbourne is renowned for its extensive and reliable public transport systems. You can get around the city easily using either the bus routes, trains or tramlines and you use a Myki card to make travelling less stressful. You simply top up this card and use it to pay your fares quickly and easily.

If you are looking to travel around the world famous Central business District of Melbourne then you can do this for free as a free tram service operates in the area. With a wide range of bars, restaurants and other tourist attractions in the area, being able to hop from place to place for free is ideal for tourists new to the area.

Tourist transportation

Melbourne also offers tourists transportation services such as the Melbourne Visitors Shuttle which take tourist around Melbourne, stopping at 15 interesting sites. You can choose to get off the shuttle at any one of these sights and the service runs every 15 minutes. The City Circle free tram does a full circuit of Melbourne and is ideal for tourists. Again, you can get on and off at any stop and the full trip comes with commentary to help you recognise all the interesting sights and places in Melbourne.

Car hire

Melbourne is a beautiful and exciting city which is quite spread out with parklands and open areas. You may choose to hire a car during your trip to visit these areas of stunning natural beauty. While this is a great way to see the outskirts of the city, traffic in the centre of Melbourne can become very congested so perhaps stick to public transport in the city centre.

On foot

Many of the sights and most well-known places of interest in Melbourne are within walking distance of each other. So why not ditch the transport and discover Melbourne via your own route in your own time. Walking around Melbourne allows you to explore at your own pace and investigate all the quirky backstreet shops, restaurants and markets which you won’t get to see on any guided tour.
