Winding Down Winter

Top 5 Melbourne Attractions to Visit in Winter

Although winter signals the dramatic temperature drop experienced every year in Melbourne, it also is a fantastic time for events and attractions. Running from June to August, these colder months mean donning layers, winter coats and eating hearty, warming foods. With most events being within easy transport distance from the CBD, you can enjoy the city’s cultural wintry delights from home or from the comfort of your serviced apartment. So you aren’t left out in the cold, we’ve put together our top 5 Melbourne attractions to visit this winter.

The chillier months are one of the best times to visit Melbourne’s renowned aquarium. Avoid the crowds and warm up as you gaze in awe at beautiful ocean creatures. Open from 9:30am – 6pm daily, Melbourne’s aquarium is located beside the Yarra River in the city. Divided into 4 separate worlds that each emphasise a different aspect of aquatic life, it is the only place in Australia which houses Antarctic penguins. Daily highlights include shark and stingray dive-feeding shows in the aquarium’s infamous ‘fishbowl’.

Melbourne International Film Festival

Nothing says winter more than snuggling up in front of a great film. Taking place every year in the city, the Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF) showcases the best in current cinema from around the world as well as retrospectives, tributes, and discussion programs. Running from 28 July – 14 August this year, the MIFF is one of the oldest film festivals in the world and the most significant screen event in Australia.

Melbourne Winter Masterpieces

What better way to warm up your body and your mind than taking shelter in a beautiful art gallery? Introduced in 2004, Melbourne Winter Masterpieces is an annual series of major exhibitions which balance curatorial excellence with popular appeal. Held over 100 days between June and October, selected international artworks are showcased at the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV), the Melbourne Museum and the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI).

The winter months also mean school holidays. Keep yourself and your kids entertained by taking them to Scienceworks! Located at Spotswood, Scienceworks is an educational and recreational attraction for both children and adults. Open daily from 10am –  4:30pm, Scienceworks always have a wide range of exhibitions and shows on that are suitable for all ages. Check out their website for more information.

Don’t hide away from one of the most beautiful seasons on offer to us! Make use of the many entertaining attractions being showcased in Melbourne. Winter is also naturally a low-peak season, and this means relatively cheaper airfares and accommodation plus a less crowded destination.
